Made from 100% cotton with a fine, tightly woven construction, this 140gsm fabric offers a beautiful textile finish without being excessively heavy or bulky. The close weave makes it particularly well suited to covering book boards and creating your own book cloth.

Perfect for making your own book cloth

Use the fabric together with our Bookcloth Backing Fabric to create custom book cloth at home. Adding a suitable backing helps provide extra stability and creates a barrier between the decorative cotton and adhesive when covering book boards.

This gives bookbinders the freedom to create book cloth in a wide selection of colours instead of being limited to traditional ready-made book cloth.

Ordering by the metre

Fabric is sold per running metre at the full fabric width of approximately 89–90cm.

For example, a quantity of:

1 = approximately 100cm × 89–90cm
2 = approximately 200cm × 89–90cm
3 = approximately 300cm × 89–90cm

Multiple metres will be supplied as one continuous length wherever possible.

For bookbinding

For the best results when using this cotton as a book covering material, we recommend pairing it with our Bookcloth Backing Fabric before attaching it to your boards. This allows you to turn the coloured cotton into your own custom book cloth while retaining the natural woven appearance of the fabric.

It can then be used with common bookbinding boards such as greyboard/chipboard to create professional-looking hardcover books, journals and albums.

Tip: Always test your chosen adhesive and backing method on a small offcut before completing your finished book, particularly when working with lighter colours.

A versatile addition to your bookbinding supplies

Unlike pre-made book cloth, plain cotton gives you considerably more freedom to experiment with colour, backing methods and decorative techniques. Keep it simple for a classic cloth-bound journal, combine colours across a collection, or use it alongside decorative papers, metal book corners and other bookbinding materials to create completely individual covers.
