Create your own beautiful book cloth using our Lightweight 100% Cotton Bookcloth Backing, designed specifically for backing decorative fabrics before they are used to cover books, journals, albums and boxes.

At approximately 60gsm, this fine cotton backing provides stability and support without adding unnecessary bulk to the finished book cloth. Its lightweight construction makes it particularly useful for bookbinding, where neat corners, smooth turn-ins and flexibility around board edges are important.

Turn Your Favourite Fabric into Book Cloth

Many beautiful fabrics are suitable for book covers but are not designed to have bookbinding adhesive applied directly to them. Depending on the fabric, adhesive or moisture can penetrate through the weave and affect the appearance of the finished cover.

Adding a backing creates an additional layer between the decorative fabric and the adhesive used to attach the finished book cloth to your boards.

Once bonded to a suitable outer fabric, the result is a more stable and manageable covering material ready for use in your bookbinding projects.

Lightweight 60gsm Cotton

The 60gsm construction keeps the backing thin and lightweight, making it an excellent choice when you don't want to substantially increase the thickness of your decorative fabric.

100% Cotton

Made from 100% cotton, this backing provides a natural-fibre option for creating custom book cloth.

Its fine woven construction gives your decorative fabric additional support while allowing the finished covering material to remain flexible and easy to work with.

Reversible Cellulose-Based Finish

The backing features a cellulose-derived, water-reversible finish that provides additional body and stability while retaining the flexibility required for book covering.

The reversible finish is particularly suited to traditional book and paper craft applications where a permanently plasticised backing is not desired.

Suitable For

Use your finished backed fabric for hardcover books, handmade journals, notebooks, photo albums, guest books, portfolios, slipcases, decorative boxes, fabric-covered stationery, rebinding projects and other book arts.

It can also be paired with our 100% Cotton Bookbinding Fabric to create your own solid-colour book cloth.

How to Use

The backing is designed to be bonded to the reverse side of your chosen decorative fabric before the fabric is attached to book board.

Cut the backing and decorative fabric to the required size and bond the two layers together using your preferred bookcloth-making method. Once completely dry, the finished backed fabric can be trimmed and used to cover your boards.

We recommend testing a small piece first when working with a new fabric, particularly very light-coloured, delicate or loosely woven materials.

Cotton or Polycotton Backing?

We offer two bookcloth backing weights for different applications.

Our 60gsm 100% Cotton Bookcloth Backing is the lightweight option and is ideal when you want minimal additional thickness, flexibility and a natural-fibre backing.

Our 100gsm Polycotton Bookcloth Backing provides a more substantial backing when additional body and structure are preferred.
