Japanese Stab Binding
Japanese stab binding is a traditional hand-sewn bookbinding method where the pages are stitched together through the spine edge. Unlike modern bindings, the stitching remains visible on the outside of the book, creating a decorative and functional spine.
This binding style is ideal for:
• Journals
• Sketchbooks
• Guest books
• Scrapbooks
• Notebooks
• Art books
Because the pages are stitched through the side, Japanese stab binding works best with loose single sheets rather than folded signatures. It is especially popular for handmade books and craft projects because it requires minimal tools and can be done entirely by hand.
How Japanese Stab Binding Works
Holes are punched along the spine edge of the stacked pages and covers. Thread is then sewn through these holes following a pattern, forming both the structure of the book and the decorative design on the spine.
There are many traditional and modern stitch patterns, ranging from simple straight-line designs to complex geometric patterns. The stitching not only holds the book together but becomes part of the cover design.
Why Should You Try Japanese Stab Binding?
• Easy for beginners
• No glue or special equipment needed
• Strong and durable
• Decorative exposed stitching
• Perfect for creative covers and thread colours
• Suitable for thick or thin books
Important Note
Because the pages are stitched through the spine, Japanese stab bound books do not open completely flat. This makes them best suited for writing, drawing, or display rather than heavy book reading.
Our Japanese Stab Binding Templates
Our templates are designed to remove guesswork from spacing and sewing paths. Each template includes printable hole guides and matching app files that show the stitching order and thread usage.
About the Stab Binding App
The included Stab Binding App file allows you to upload the pattern and view the complete sewing path digitally before stitching.
The app:
• Animates the stitching path step-by-step
• Shows how many times the thread passes through each hole
• Calculates the estimated thread length
• Helps prevent stitching mistakes before you begin
The App allows you to create your own patterns too.
This makes it easier to plan your binding, choose the right thread length, and confidently stitch your book without guesswork.

Why use graph paper for stab binding?
Graph paper is one of the easiest and most accurate tools for planning stab binding hole patterns. The grid gives you built-in measurements, so you can design and repeat patterns without needing a ruler for every step.
