Using an awl for bookbinding

Mark the sewing stations first, support the folded signature in a cradle or on a protected surface, and punch straight through the fold. Consistent spacing and angle make sewing easier and help the finished spine look neat.

Care and safety

Keep the point covered when it is not in use and work away from your hands. A sharp, controlled awl requires less force and reduces torn paper around the sewing holes.

Use it with our rulers and awl guides, bookbinding needles and linen thread.
