Waxed Linen Thread – No 3

R130.00

Waxed linen thread for bookbinding gives hand-sewn books a strong, tidy stitch and is especially useful when the sewing forms part of the finished design.

This waxed linen thread is specially suited for bookbinding projects where the stitching is meant to be seen and appreciated — especially exposed spine, coptic stitch, long stitch, and other decorative bindings. Strong, flexible, and easy to work with, it gives your finished books a clean, professional look while adding a beautiful handmade character.

Each length is carefully waxed to improve durability, reduce fraying, and help the thread glide smoothly through paper and board. The wax coating also gives better grip and knot security, making sewing signatures and spine structures easier and more controlled.

Perfect for bookbinders, journal makers, and repair work, this thread balances strength with flexibility so your bindings stay secure without becoming stiff or brittle.

Features:

  • 100% linen thread

  • Hand-waxed for smooth stitching

  • Excellent for exposed spine bindings

  • Ideal for coptic stitch, long stitch, and decorative sewing

  • Strong, durable, and flexible

  • Tangle-resistant and easy to tension

  • Suitable for journals, sketchbooks, and handbound books

A dependable, workshop-ready thread that looks as good as it performs — especially when your spine sewing is part of the design.

Choosing Thread for Your Binding

Consider the paper weight, number of signatures, hole size and binding structure before choosing a colour and length. A contrasting colour highlights decorative sewing, while a colour close to the cover or paper creates a quieter finish. Avoid using thread that is too thick for the paper because excessive tension can enlarge or tear sewing holes.

Sewing Tips

  • Measure the required length before cutting and allow extra for knots and handling.
  • Use a suitable bookbinding needle that passes comfortably through the prepared holes.
  • Pull each stitch firmly and evenly, without crushing signatures or cutting into the paper.
  • Keep the thread clean and untangled while working.
  • Test knots and tension on a practice signature when trying a new binding structure.

Bindings That Show the Thread

Waxed linen thread is well suited to Coptic, long-stitch and exposed-spine books, as well as decorative Japanese sewing. Browse our Japanese stab binding templates for patterns designed to turn the spine stitching into a visual feature.

Storage

Store unused thread in a clean, dry container away from heat and dust. Wind loose lengths carefully so they do not kink or knot before the next project.
