Australian Blackwood Bookbinding Press – Adjustable 40cm
A good bookbinding press is one of those tools you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.
Whether you're gluing a book spine, decorating book edges or making your own notepads, having a reliable way to hold everything securely makes the job so much easier.
Our Australian Blackwood Bookbinding Press is locally made from solid Australian Blackwood, with smooth, rounded wooden jaws and adjustable threaded rods. It's a practical addition to any bookbinder's workbench, whether you're just starting out or have been making books for years.
One Press, Plenty of Uses
Spine Gluing and Book Construction
Keep your text block firmly together while applying glue, mull, spine lining materials or reinforcing the spine. The press helps maintain alignment while leaving the spine accessible for working.
Book Edge Painting and Decoration
Working on decorative book edges? The press holds your pages tightly together while you paint, stencil, gild or decorate the edges.
It's particularly useful when preparing book blocks for sprayed edges, marbled effects and other decorative finishes.
Book Edge Sanding
Secure your text block while carefully sanding the page edges to create a smoother surface before applying decorative finishes.
Gilding and Foiling
Keep the pages compressed while preparing book edges for gilding, metallic finishes and other decorative techniques.
Notepad and Tear-Off Pad Making
Making your own notepads? Use the press to hold your stack of paper neatly aligned while applying padding glue to the edge.
Handmade Journals and Scrapbooks
A handy tool for holding journal pages and text blocks together during assembly, gluing and finishing.
Book Repairs and Restoration
Useful for supporting book blocks during certain repair and spine-lining tasks. Protective sheets or boards can be placed between delicate materials and the wooden jaws when needed.
Three Adjustable Book Size Settings
Not every book is the same size, which is why we've included three adjustment positions.
Simply reposition the threaded rods to suit the width of your project.
- 24cm – Smaller journals, notebooks and book blocks
- 28cm – Medium-sized books and journals
- 31cm – Larger books and wider projects
The maximum jaw opening of 6.5cm also allows you to work with thicker text blocks, chunky journals and stacks of paper.
Easy-to-Use Spin Handles
No spanners or additional tightening tools needed.
The specially designed spin handles are comfortable to grip and allow you to tighten or release the press by hand.
We've also added protective caps to the ends of the threaded rods for a neater finish and to cover the exposed metal ends.
Made from Australian Blackwood
Each press is made using solid Australian Blackwood, chosen for its attractive natural grain and sturdy construction.
The wooden jaws are smoothly finished with rounded corners, making them comfortable to handle and suitable for regular use.
As this is a natural timber product, the colour and grain pattern may vary slightly from press to press. Each one has its own character.

A Few Tips
For best results, tighten both handles gradually and evenly to distribute pressure across your book block.
When working with delicate paper, finished covers or decorative surfaces, use protective boards or clean waste paper between the book and the press.
Avoid overtightening, particularly when working with softer materials.
A practical, versatile bookbinding tool for anyone who enjoys making, repairing and decorating books.
