Bookbinding Paste Powder – Mix Fresh Paste Whenever You Need It

Bookbinding Paste Powder is a convenient dry adhesive powder that mixes with water to create a smooth, brushable paste for bookbinding, paper crafts, covering and cartonnage.

Instead of purchasing a large container of ready-mixed paste that may sit on the shelf between projects, you can simply mix a small amount whenever you need it. The remaining powder stays dry in the container, ready for your next project.

A little powder makes a surprisingly useful amount of paste. One 50 g bottle can make approximately 250–375 ml of prepared paste, depending on the consistency you prefer.

This makes it ideal for both occasional bookbinders and regular makers who would rather prepare small, fresh batches for each project.

Why Use Paste for Bookbinding?

Paste has been used in book and paper crafts because it spreads easily into a thin, even layer and gives you time to position and smooth your materials.

This is particularly useful when covering boards, working with paper and completing projects where a thick bead of adhesive would be difficult to spread evenly.

Unlike a ready-to-use liquid adhesive, this product is supplied as a dry concentrate. You decide how much to prepare and how thick you want it.

Need a normal brushable paste? Use the standard mixture.

Working on a project where you'd prefer a little more body and grab? Mix it slightly thicker.

Mix Only What You Need

One of the biggest advantages of Bookbinding Paste Powder is that there is no need to prepare the entire bottle at once.

For a standard bookbinding paste, mix:

10 g powder + 75 ml clean water

This produces approximately 75 ml of prepared paste before allowing for any change in volume as the powder hydrates.

For a thicker paste, use:

Up to 15 g powder + 75 ml clean water

This gives you control over the consistency depending on the materials and type of project you're working on.

If you accidentally make the paste slightly thicker than you prefer, simply add a small amount of water at a time and stir until you reach the desired consistency.

How to Mix Bookbinding Paste Powder

Measure the required amount of clean water into a suitable container.

Slowly sprinkle the powder into the water while stirring continuously. Adding the powder gradually rather than dumping it in all at once helps produce a smoother mixture and reduces lumping.

Mix thoroughly and then leave the paste to stand for approximately 20 minutes. During this time the powder absorbs the water and the mixture develops its final consistency.

Stir thoroughly once more before using.

Your paste is now ready to apply with a paste brush, glue brush or roller.

Apply a thin, even layer rather than an unnecessarily heavy coating.

Excellent for Covering Book Board

Bookbinding paste is particularly useful when covering greyboard/chipboard with decorative paper.

Apply an even coat of prepared paste to the reverse of your covering material, position the board and smooth the material carefully over the surface.

It can be used when making:

Hardcover books, journals and notebooks; book boxes and slipcases; decorative storage boxes; albums; portfolios; covered boards; cartonnage projects; and other paper-based crafts.

Useful for Paper Covering

Because the prepared paste can be brushed into a thin layer, it is well suited to many paper-covering applications.

Use it for decorative papers, printed papers, endpapers and other suitable paper materials where you need an adhesive that can be spread across a larger surface.

As with any wet adhesive, moisture can affect different papers differently. Thin, highly absorbent and speciality papers should always be tested first.

Adjust the Paste to Suit Your Project

There isn't always one perfect paste consistency for every bookbinding job.

For general paper and covering work, start with:

10 g : 75 ml water

If you want a heavier consistency with more body, increase the powder gradually up to:

15 g : 75 ml water

You can also adjust an already prepared mixture with a little additional water.

This means one product can be prepared differently depending on the job rather than forcing you to work with one predetermined viscosity.

50 g Goes Further Than It Looks

Although the bottle contains only 50 g of dry powder, it is a concentrate.

At our standard mixing ratio:

10 g + 75 ml water

a 50 g bottle provides enough powder for approximately five small batches, using 75 ml water for each batch.

That's approximately 375 ml of paste from one 50 g bottle when mixed at the standard strength.

At the thicker ratio of:

15 g + 75 ml water

50 g of powder is sufficient for approximately 250 ml of paste, with a little powder remaining.

This is why we prefer supplying the product dry: you're not paying for a bottle largely filled with water, and you don't need to prepare more adhesive than your current project requires.

Standard Bookbinding Paste
10 g powder + 75 ml clean water

Thicker Bookbinding Paste
Up to 15 g powder + 75 ml clean water

Slowly sprinkle the powder into the water while stirring. Mix thoroughly, leave for approximately 20 minutes, then stir again before use.

Apply with a brush or roller in a thin, even coat.

If required, add small amounts of water to adjust the consistency.

Important Information

Always test the prepared paste on a small piece of your chosen material before beginning your finished project, particularly when working with delicate, highly absorbent, coated, printed or speciality papers.

Remember that this is a water-based prepared paste once mixed, so paper grain, moisture and the amount of adhesive applied can affect how paper behaves while wet.

Mix only the quantity you expect to use and keep the remaining dry powder tightly sealed and protected from moisture.

Clean brushes, rollers, mixing containers and other tools with water after use and before the paste has dried.
