Book Wheat Starch



Natural starches come in many different forms. Starches make an excellent water soluble adhesive-paste for bookbinding, hinging prints, and repairing works of art on paper.


Measure Wheat Starch: Determine the amount of wheat starch needed based on the size and scope of your bookbinding project. A common ratio is around 1 part wheat starch to 4-5 parts water.
Mix with Water:

In a heat-resistant bowl or double boiler, combine the measured wheat starch with cold water. Stir well to create a smooth paste, ensuring there are no lumps.

Heat the Mixture: Place the bowl or double boiler on low to medium heat. Continuously stir the mixture to prevent it from clumping or sticking to the bottom.

Cooking Process: Gradually heat the mixture until it thickens, and the wheat starch is fully cooked. This usually takes around 15-20 minutes. Be patient and maintain a consistent stirring motion.

Strain the Paste: For a smoother consistency, strain the cooked wheat starch paste through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to remove any remaining lumps or impurities. This step is optional but can enhance the quality of the paste.

Cooling: Allow the strained paste to cool before using it for bookbinding. This ensures that the paste reaches a workable temperature and consistency.
Adjust pH (Optional):

If desired, test the pH of the wheat starch paste using pH testing strips. Adjust the pH if necessary by adding small amounts of baking soda or acetic acid.

Use a brush or a spatula to apply the wheat starch paste to the surfaces you wish to bind. Apply a thin, even layer for optimal adhesion.

Binding: Press the materials together and secure them while the wheat starch paste dries. Use weights, clamps, or any other suitable method to ensure a tight bond.

Allow the bound materials to dry completely. The drying time may vary depending on the thickness of the applied paste and environmental conditions.

Store any leftover wheat starch paste in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out. Reheat and stir before using it again.
